Mechanical vs Electronic Shifting: What’s the Difference?

If you’re buying a new bike or thinking about upgrading your drivetrain, you may have come across the terms ‘mechanical’ shifting and ‘electronic’ shifting. Both systems do the same job, moving the chain between gears, but they work in very different ways.

Understanding the difference can help you decide which system is best for the type of riding you do.

Mechanical Shifting

Mechanical shifting is the traditional system that has been used on bikes for decades. When you move the shift lever, a steel cable pulls the derailleur, which in turn, moves the chain onto a different gear. 

It’s a simple and effective system that most riders are familiar with.

Advantages

Reliable and proven
Mechanical systems have been refined over many years and are known for their durability, which is great for long endurance events or lots of bike packing. 

Easy to service
Any bike shop should be able to adjust or repair them, and replacement parts like cables are relatively inexpensive and readily available. 

Lower cost
Mechanical groupsets are usually much more affordable than electronic ones. Mechanical groupsets are also cheaper to maintain, with their spare parts costing less than their electric counterparts. 

No batteries required
You never have to think about charging anything before a ride, you can simply get on and pedal. 

Things to consider

Over time, cables can stretch or wear, which can make shifting feel less precise. This usually just means the gears need a small adjustment or new cables installed. You can get a specific service to adjust them, most commonly known as a gear index, or all major services will cover the labour cost to ensure smooth shifting on both your derailleurs. 


Electronic Shifting

Electronic shifting replaces cables with small motors and electronic signals. When you press the shift button, the derailleur moves automatically to the correct position.

These systems are becoming more common on higher-end bikes and performance builds.

Electronic shifting groupsets are often known to be more expensive than mechanical groupsets. However, SRAM are trying to change that, with their entry level electronic groupset, SRAM APEX AXS, being priced similarly to Shimano Ultegra mechanical. 

Advantages

Very precise shifting
Electronic systems move the derailleur to the exact position every time, giving consistently accurate gear changes.

Minimal effort to shift
The buttons require very little pressure compared to traditional levers which is great if you have wrist issues or ride in very cold climates. 

Consistent performance
As there are no cables to stretch, shifting remains crisp. When an issue arises, it’s most likely a bent derailleur hanger. 

Things to consider

Electronic systems cost more and rely on rechargeable batteries. While battery life is usually very good (1000km+), it’s something riders need to remember to check occasionally. 

Electronic groupset repairs tend to be more expensive because the components contain motors, wiring, and electronic circuitry rather than simple cables and springs. When a problem occurs, it’s often necessary to replace an entire component rather than making a small adjustment or swapping an inexpensive part. Systems such as Shimano Di2 and SRAM AXS are also sealed units that sometimes require specialist diagnostic tools, which can add to the cost. The upside is that electronic drivetrains are generally very reliable and require far less regular adjustment than traditional mechanical systems.

 


 

Which One Should You Choose?

For most riders, both systems work extremely well.

Mechanical shifting is still a fantastic choice for commuters, recreational riders, and anyone who values simplicity and easy maintenance.

Electronic shifting tends to appeal to riders looking for the most precise performance and the latest technology, particularly on high-end road or race bikes.

 


 

Final Thoughts

There’s no single “best” option, just the one that suits your riding style, budget, and preferences. 

If you want a groupset which functions great, doesn’t cost the earth and will last you a long time, we recommend the Shimano 105 12s Groupset. 

If you are looking to venture into the world of electronic shifting, but don’t want to spend a fortune, then we recommend the SRAM APEX AXS Groupset.
